Can I use a Shimano brake lever with a SRAM caliper?
By Crankworthy · Published · Updated
No. Brake levers and calipers are designed as a matched hydraulic system. Shimano uses mineral oil and most SRAM brakes use DOT fluid — the wrong fluid damages the seals — and even where the fluid matches, the lever and caliper are not designed to work together.
Why
Hydraulic brakes rely on seals made for one specific fluid. Mineral oil and DOT fluid are chemically different, and putting the wrong one through a system degrades the seals and can cause the brake to fail.
The lever and caliper are also sized for each other: how far the lever moves, and how much force reaches the pads, depends on both ends being designed as a pair.
Replace brakes as a set — lever, hose and caliper — rather than mixing brands.
