Can I fit a bigger brake rotor, like 160mm to 180mm?
By Crankworthy · Published · Updated
Usually yes, with a +20mm caliper adapter that moves the caliper out to meet the bigger rotor. Check your fork and frame's maximum rotor size first — the manufacturer lists it, and exceeding it overloads the mounts.
Why
A bigger rotor gives the caliper more leverage over the wheel, which means more stopping power and better heat handling on long descents.
The caliper has to move outward by the same amount the rotor radius grows. A +20mm adapter takes a caliper from a 160mm rotor position to 180mm.
Forks and frames have a maximum rotor size because a bigger rotor puts more force through the mounts. Stay within it.
